Preparing for flooding
Being prepared for flooding can keep you safe. A simple checklist can help you if you flood.
Things to consider:
You can check your flood risk and sign up for flood warnings by visiting the Environment Agency website in England.
In Wales you can check flood risk by visiting Natural Resources Wales site.
Make sure you have the correct insurance cover including flood cover – please check your building and contents or business policy with your insurance company.
Find out how to turn off your gas, electricity and water supplies.
Keep a list of useful telephone numbers (including your GP details, insurance claim line & policy number)
Further information can be found below.
Put together an emergency flood kit.
Think about the needs of children, babies, elderly, the disabled at home and your pets. Don’t forget to check on your neighbours.
Take detailed photos of your property and contents NOW before any flood occurs.
Make an action plan to use in the event of a flood.
Identify and list urgent actions in priority of value.
Action plan
Property flood resilience
If you have Property Flood Resilience (PFR) measures such as flood gates, check that they are in working order and readily accessible to install.
Move
What needs to be moved upstairs.
Pets
Pets are also part of the family and affected by flooding. Ensure that you have supplies in place and consider where they will go if you have to leave the property due to flooding.

Emergency kit contents
Being prepared can make an enormous difference if your home is ever flooded. Putting together a Flood Kit or ‘grab bag’ helps minimise risk and makes it easier to stay safe whether you remain in your home or need to evacuate to a rest centre.
