Students from a primary school in Newport, South Wales, have raised vital funds for flooded communities after organising a range of fundraising events to raise awareness of flooding.

Year five students from St Mary’s Primary School in the city decided to raise funds after learning about natural disasters as part of their spring term work. The students decided to fundraise for the National Flood Forum after seeing the devastating effects of flooding close to home in Monmouth last Autumn.

Year five Teacher, Siobhan Thurgood, said:

“Our spring term theme was 'Our Wonderful World' and part of the theme included looking at natural disasters around the world. When focusing on natural disasters closer to home, we looked at local flooding, including the devastating flooding that occurred in Monmouth in November.

“The children researched the impact of flooding and even wrote and recorded their own news reports on the floods. Following this, the children were given a task to choose a charity (we first asked if they wanted to choose a global or local charity, the majority chose local), and National Flood Forum was their chosen one. They were tasked with organising a way to raise funds for the charity as well as designing some posters to send to their friends and family.

“The children chose a sponsored penalty shootout and were given sponsor forms to take home over the Easter holidays. In total they raised £362.40 for the charity which they were absolutely delighted about.”

The National Flood Forum want to extend our thanks to everyone involved in the fundraising project from  St Mary’s Primary School, particularly the children for their incredible efforts.
