Project Sponge (Slough)
Project Sponge applies “sponge city” principles to reduce flood risk by managing water where it falls, rather than relying solely on traditional drainage systems. The project focuses on urban catchments such as the Salt Hill Stream and Chalvey Ditches, using a combination of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), green infrastructure, and river restoration to slow, store, and absorb rainwater. Interventions include rain gardens, wetlands, permeable surfaces, and redesigned public spaces that double as flood storage.
