Innovative drainage project set to reduce flood risk in Slough

A water drainage project that will see dozens of specialist planters installed across community venues in Slough will launch this Spring.

The planters act like sponges, to naturally soak away and filter roof water, before slowly releasing it back into the sewer system. This reduces the risk of flooding by diverting water from drains and sewers during periods of heavy rain. The planters also reduce pollution and increase biodiversity by attracting insects to carefully selected plants. The community venues selected to house planters will offer educational opportunities for local children to learn about nature and sustainability.

The project has been developed by Project Sponge, a dedicated flood resilience partnership project between Slough Borough Council Buckinghamshire Council, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and the National Flood Forum.
