Guidance and support to help you recover from flooding without insurance

If your home has flooded and you don’t have insurance, knowing what to do next matters. This page sets out practical recovery steps and highlights sources of support that may be available to help you through the process.

Preparing for recovery without insurance

Have a plan

Having a plan in place is an important first step. If you are responsible for managing the recovery yourself, there are actions you can take in advance to be better prepared.

Record the damage

  • Take clear photographs of damage to your property and possessions.

  • Keep notes of what has been affected, even if items are beyond repair.

  • Keep copies of any receipts or invoices linked to clean‑up and repairs.

Supplies

Local supplies of essential items can run out quickly after a flood. These may include:

  • Disinfectants and cleaning products

  • Brushes, mops, and protective clothing

  • Dehumidifiers (also known as driers), fans, generators, and pumps

  • Builders, electricians, and other tradespeople

Make a list of what you may need and where it can be sourced. You may need to look beyond your local area and arrange for someone to collect items if you are unable to travel.

Clear standing water promptly

Once floodwater has subsided, it is vital to clear standing water as quickly as possible. While brick and concrete floors absorb water slowly, they can take months to dry if water is left in place—often around one inch of drying per month.

Act quickly

Taking fast action at this stage can save months of drying time later and reduce the risk of long‑term damage.

Hire equipment

Dehumidifiers and fans can be hired from most reputable equipment hire shops. Using them early can help speed up drying and reduce health issues associated with damp and mould.
